The closing film of the 42nd International Film Festival of India ‘The Lady’ is the extraordinary story of Aung San Suu Kyi and her husband, Michael Aris. It is also the story of the peaceful quest of the woman who is at the core of Burma’s democracy movement. Despite distance, long separations, and a dangerously hostile regime, their love endures until the very end. It is set against a backdrop of political turmoil.
The film is directed by Luc Besson who is a French filmmaker, screenwriter and producer. In 1985, Besson made ‘Subway’ which garnered three Cesar Awards and established his signature visual style. He followed this up with ‘The Big Blue’, which became a social phenomenon. ‘La Femme Nikita’ (1990) and ‘The Professional’ (1994), confirmed Besson’s popularity in France and added an international dimension. His 1995 sci-fi project, ‘The Fifth Element’, became one of the biggest hits and won him the Cesar Award for Best Director. In 1999, he directed his version of the story of ‘The Messenger: Joan of arc’, which earned him another Cesar nomination. In 2000, Besson chaired the jury of the 53rd Cannes Festival and was the youngest-ever Cannes jury president. After a five-year gap, Besson made his directorial comeback in 2005 with Angel-A, and in 2010, he made ‘The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec’.
